Curly Hair: 5 Mistakes to Avoid
Everyone envies your curly hair… The secret? 5 mistakes to absolutely avoid to show off pretty curls in all circumstances!
#1 Washing your curly hair too often
If it's not already advisable to wash your hair every day in general, it's even less so with curly hair. Naturally dry, curly hair needs its natural sebum to be healthy: however, even a very gentle shampoo will always tend to dry out the hair a little. It's better to adopt a more spaced-out routine for curly hair : a shampoo once a week and a co-wash – if necessary – between two washes. Nothing prevents you, however, from moistening your curls every morning with a spray of mineral water mixed with a few drops of oil.
#2 Confusing nourishing and moisturizing your curly hair
So stop nourishing your curls when they need hydration and vice versa. You will only make the problems worse! Hydration and nutrition are two distinct needs: dehydrated hair lacks water, dry hair essentially lacks nutrition. We then hydrate the hair with water, aloe vera-based products , glycerin while we nourish hair with oils, butters, serums.
#3 Dry styling your curly hair
Never, oh never, detangle your curly hair when it's dry. This is the best way to break it and damage the curls. Detangle your hair right after washing, when it's still damp (and not soaked with water!), preferably with a soft-bristled brush or a wide-toothed comb that will limit breakage and the appearance of frizz.
#4 Using heat excessively
We all know that heat is bad for hair, especially textured hair, which tends to be drier. Heat dehydrates the hair fiber, which promotes breakage and the appearance of split ends. So, say goodbye to hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners... The ideal for curly hair? Natural drying! But to avoid going out with a wet head in the cold, humid air of the early morning, use the cold air button on your hair dryer. And exceptionally, if you use a heating device, always apply a heat-protective treatment beforehand.
#5 Not protecting your curly hair at night
Nighttime isn't necessarily good for your hair, especially if you don't protect it. First of all, sleeping with your hair down will crush your curls and break their pretty shape... The solution? The pineapple bun! Tie them in a bun on top of your head, without tightening too much, to keep the curls when you wake up. Then, sleeping on a cotton pillow will absorb the natural sebum in your hair and dry it out. Change your pillowcase for silk or satin, or wrap your hair in a scarf of the same material to preserve the hair's moisture, ensure its shine and limit the formation of knots.
